4/17/1799Srirangapatnam was surrounded by British Army in the fourth and last Mysore war which began in 1798. Tipu Sultan' was killed in the battle on 4th May. The East India Company announced the Seringapatanam Medal (1799).
10/5/1989Dalai Lama was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize (1989).
10/5/1989Amir Timur of Timur Lang invaded India with 92 squadrons of horses and 90,000 cavalry and reached the banks of Sindhu river near Atak city (now in Pakistan). He then attacked Delhi because its Muslim Sultanate was too tolerant of Hindu idolatry. A Mongolian follower of Sufism, he was one of the most ruthless of all conquerors. Timur crossed the Indus River at Attock (now in Pakistan) on 24 September 1398.
1/14/1761The third and last battle of Panipat, fought between the Marathas and the Afghan invader Ahmad Shah Abadli, started. The Marathas lost 28,000 soldiers and were virtually routed in North India thus ending the Maratha hegemony.
12/26/1904First cross-country motor car race inaugurated between Dehli and Bombay started its rally. It was organised by Motor Union of Western India.
7/15/1967Narayan Shripad Rajhans (Balgandharv), famous singer and actor, passed away.
9/4/1990An all-party meeting refuses to endorse the decision to implement Mandal Commission Report according to which 27\% jobs are reserved for backward communities.
12/26/1925Krishna G. Ginde, great musician and singer, was born.
5/22/1961Jnanpeeth Award was instituted and the first award was given in 1965. This award is given for the best creative literary writing by any Indian citizen in any of the languages included in the VIII Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The award carries a cash price of Rs 2.5 lakh, a citation and a bronze momento.
7/23/1927Daily radio transmission broadcasting in India started by Bombay Radio Station. This was the first Commercial Radio Station.
